Bodh Gaya, Jan 8 (ANI): Buddhist monks performed Bhutan's traditional mask dance 'Cham' at Bodh Gaya in Bihar with an aim to ward off evil spirits and spread peace around the world.

The classical dance of Bhutan reflects the religious mask pageants and ritual dances, which the Buddhist monks executed at a monastery in Bodh Gaya.

Buddhist religious leader, Bhutan, Bhante Sonam Dorji told reporters that the dance is organised to spread peace all over the world.

"They come to overcome all the evil spirits and when they overcome evil spirits then we will continue other dances. So, also the dance is significant to overcome the evil spirits and to spread peace everywhere, peace in this area, and peace all over the world.

"All these evil spirits make problem. If we overcome evil spirits then there will be peace. So, particularly these types of dance we do to overcome evil spirits," said Dorji.

Buddhist devotees from different countries gathered to witness the traditional dance.

Costumed Lamas with gaily-painted masks, ceremonial swords and sparkling jewels, leaped and swung to the rhythm of resounding drums, trumpeting of horns and chanting of monks.

The event was witnessed by a huge congregation of Buddhists and foreign tourists, who gather at this time of the year, just to see the extraordinary dance.

Buddhist scriptures describe it as the "Navel of the Earth", and 100,000 pilgrims and tourists visit every year, packing the town of Bodh Gaya and Mahabodhi Temple. (ANI)
