Islamists in the UAE

ABU DHABI, UAE - United Arab Emirates security forces say 41 people have been arrested and will go on trial accused of trying to "seize power and establish a caliphate" in the Middle East nation.

The UAE state news agency said the group comprised foreigners and UAE nationals who had planned to overthrow the government and enforce an ISIS-style extremist state.

Attorney General Salem Saeed Kubaish said the suspects planned to "carry out terrorist acts on UAE territories", but did not elaborate further.

The announcement is the latest in a series of trials against Islamists in the UAE. Rights groups have attacked the fairness of the hearings.

Kubaish said the group had a 'takfiri' outlook, referring to an extremist Sunni Muslim belief pursued by so-called ISIS.

"Takfir" is the practice of one Muslim declaring another an apostate, one which ISIS has used to carry out punishments ranging from burying mothers and their babies alive to burning a Jordanian fighter pilot to death.

Kubaish said the group had guns and explosives and had been in touch with militant groups abroad.

The UAE government takes Islamic extremist coup plots extremely seriously. In July 2013, 68 Islamists were jailed without right of appeal after being found guilty of a plot to overthrow the UAE's government.

Human rights group however have said the verdict "cemented the UAE's reputation as a serious abuser of basic human rights".

In January last year, a court in the capital Abu Dhabi convicted 30 people over links to the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood party.

The alleged terrorists were said to be linked to an Emirati Islamist political society, al-Islah, which prosecutors asserted was a branch of the Egypt-based Brotherhood.

Al-Islah, however, says it favours peaceful reform and denies ties to the Islamist movement.> BNN
