The United Nations is concluding its peacekeeping mission in Timor-Leste, reports TVNZ One News.

Representatives for the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) say that significant progress has been made in establishing peace and security in the country.

The end of UNMIT brings to a close more than a decade of UN peacekeeping and political missions in the country and comes 37 years after Timor-Leste first appeared on the agenda of the UN Security Council.

"The Timorese people and its leaders have shown courage and unswerving resolve to overcome great challenges," said the Head of UNMIT, Finn Reske-Nielsen.

"Although there remains much work ahead, this is an historic moment in recognising the progress already made."

Reske-Nielsen said that when UNMIT was formed in 1999 the country was ravaged by fighting and political upheaval and shaken by displacement and suffering.

Although challenges still remain, Reske-Nielsen said that all UNPOL and most general civilian staff will have departed Timor-Leste by the end of December.

"As peacekeepers depart, we look forward to a new phase in this relationship focusing on social and economic development," he said. more...
