EU, Georgia discuss intensification of relations

Georgia, Tbilisi, Dec. 1 / Trend N. Kirtzkhalia / European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili have discussed the issues of intensifying the relations between the EU and Georgia at a meeting in Yerevan.

The Georgian presidential administration told Trend today that the meeting was held within the summit of European People's Party for Eastern Europe held in Yerevan.

The sides have expressed satisfaction with the current level of relations between Georgia and the EU and called for the rapid signing of Georgia's associated membership agreement, visa-free communication and a comprehensive trade agreement.

Saakashvili and Barroso have also discussed the recent events in Georgia. Barroso has expressed hope that Georgia will continue a way of strengthening democracy and sustainable development.

The parties have stressed the need to strengthen the cooperation within the Eastern Partnership program, as this format is important for regional security and participation of the region in the development of the relations with the EU.
