Baku, Azerbaijan, Apr.20 By Elena Kosolapova – Trend: Kazakhstan is ready to provide a platform for negotiations to resolve the situation in Syria, Kazakh Foreign Minister Erlan Idrisov in a letter to Syrian oposition, RIA Novosti reported.

Earlier, representatives of the Syrian opposition officially appealed to Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev with a request to mediate further negotiations for resolving the ongoing crisis in Syria.

"We are committed to support the attempts to establish peace and stability in Syria made by international community and individual countries. We would be fundamentally willing to consider the creation of a platform for dialogue of the parties," Erlan Idrisov said.

He also invited the Syrian opposition to Kazakhstan to discuss Astana’s mediation. He said the Kazakh foreign ministry would be happy to conduct a preliminary informal (non-public) exchange of views.

During the conflict in Syria which began in March 2011, over 150,000 people were killed and over 4.5 million have become refugees in Syrian territory as well as 2.5 million having fled to neighbouring countries.

The main burden of receiving refugees lay on Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. The total population of Syria before the conflict amounted to 20 million.
