Bangladeshi living in Germany protest against murder of Blogger Avijit Roy

BERLIN: Several hundred people have taken to the street of downtown Berlin to protest against the murder of a prominent secular Bangladeshi-American blogger who was hacked to death in Dhaka with machetes after he allegedly received threats from Islamists.

Demonstrators gathered at the German capital, at the Pariserplatz in Berlin, in front of Brandengurger Tor. The Bangladeshi-American blogger Dr. Avijit Roy, a free secular thinker and scientist was killed on Thursday night February 26, 2015 by Islamic extremists as they were returning from a book fair at Dhaka University.

Avijit Roy, who started the blog Muktomona (Free Mind) had all the comforts of a successful professional life in Atlanta, yet he wrote book after book in Bangladesh, covering subjects such as the relation between religion and science. He is the second Bangladeshi atheist blogger to have been murdered in two years and the fourth writer to have been attacked since 2004.

Avijit died soon after being rushed to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospitals. His wife and fellow blogger Rafida Ahmed Banna, also a US citizen, was seriously injured and after emergency treatment she went back to the US for better treatment.

Progressive Bangladeshi living in Germany, organized themselves to gathers on Saturday at Berlin to show there solidarity with progressive thinker in Bangladesh.  The demonstration organised by the Bangladesh community in Germany, draw attention by crying out their slogans and showing their banners “We all are Avijits, No more Killing in Alla’s name”, “Protect Free Thinker”, "Pen is Mightier ". Among the demonstrators there were also a lot of Germans and other nationals including students, film-makers. writers, scientist, politician and other progressive people.
