DUBAI, UAE - Emirates Group, the parent company of Emirates Airline, plans to add 11,000 new staff in the coming year across its businesses including the airline.

The company includes the air services provider dnata and its fast-growing carrier, which has been putting pressure on European and American airlines as it expands into new markets.

About half of the new hires, which will add 6% to the group's total number of employees, will be Dubai-based cabin crew for Emirates Airline, the group said in a statement.

The rest will be support staff as the carrier plans to add 20 airliners to its fleet this year.

Emirates is also recruiting for flight operations, engineering, airport operations, commercial business development and corporate roles.

Dubai and its flag carrier Emirates are using the city's strategic location to create a "connection hub" for flights between Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, making the airline the largest in the world in terms of passengers carried internationally.

Emirates currently operates the world's largest fleet of Airbus A380s, the world's largest passenger plane. It has more than 50 in operation and 140 on order.

Aviation has played a significant role in the growth of Dubai's economy and the sector is expected to contribute 32% to the emirate's GDP by 2020, according to government estimates.

Emirates is one of three Middle Eastern airlines making inroads into the European and US aviation markets, including Abu Dhabi-based Etihad, the official airline of the UAE, and Qatar's Gulf Air.

All three have been accused by the three largest US airlines (American Airlines, Delta and United) of unfairly competing with US carrier as they're government subsidized but all three Middle Eastern airlines deny that they're funded by their governments.
