Georgia halves its contingent in Afghanistan

Around 750 servicemen will serve in Afghanistan from 2015

Tbilisi, Georgia, Jan.2 By Nana Kirtzkhalia – Trend: Georgia halved its military contingent in Afghanistan from Jan.1, 2015.

Around 750 servicemen will serve in Afghanistan from 2015 under the Resolute Support program.

Georgian servicemen will be engaged in training of Afghan military personnel.

The decision on reducing the contingent was approved on June 8, 2014 at the meeting of Georgian State Security and Crisis Management Council held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

Georgian military contingent has been in Afghanistan since 2009. The issue of withdrawing the soldiers from this country has been repeatedly raised in Georgia. Moreover, it was proposed to hold a referendum on this issue.
