Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Dec. 2 By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend: The delegates of the UN General Assembly Second Committee adopted a resolution entitled “Role of transport and transit corridors in ensuring international cooperation for sustainable development” on Turkmenistan’s initiative, the UN News Center said.
Reportedly, Turkmenistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Aksoltan Atayeva, introducing the draft resolution, drew attention to the fact that the issue of cooperation in transport sector will be for the first time reflected in a document of the UN General Assembly.
The resolution enshrines the proposal for establishment of the global partnership for sustainable transportation.
The resolution’s provisions reflect the key elements of the Ashgabat Declaration, adopted in September 2014, which aims at creating an integrated approach to the development of transport and transit links.
The document lays the foundation for formation of transport networks, combining motorways, railways, sea and air routes through intermodal logistics centers and dry ports.
Aside from that, the resolution provides for the mobilization of financial and technical resources by the international monetary and financial institutions, the UN News Center said.
The document also includes a call addressed to the UN secretary general to draft, during consultations with the UN member states and relevant UN system agencies, a report on the ways to enhance international cooperation in this area for the UN General Assembly’s 70th Session to be held in 2015.
Some 66 countries are the resolution’s co-authors, including all the countries in Central Asia, a significant number of countries in the Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and Africa, especially the landlocked countries.
The document was supported by all the UN member states and adopted by consensus.
