More than 300 missing in Sri Lanka mudslide

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- At least 10 people died and more than 300 people remain missing after a mudslide struck central Sri Lanka on Wednesday morning.

The mudslide, which was preceded by weeks of monsoon rains, occurred at the Meeriyabedda tea plantation near the town of Haldummulla in the Badulla district, approximately 120 miles east of Colombo.

Around 500 members of Sri Lanka's security forces are searching for survivors.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa tweeted that "heavy machinery have been deployed to speed up search and rescue operations..."

On Tuesday evening, the National Building Research Organization issued a level-2 landslide warning for Badulla, Bandarawela, Ella divisional secretariat divisions and Ella-Wellawaya Road, Haputale- Beragala Road, Beragala-Wellawaya Road, Badulla-Spring Valley Road, Passara-Lunugala Road and Etampitiya-Welimada Road.JC Finley
