Incheon, South Korea – A nursing student and brand-new father, Daniel Patrick Caluag, ended the Philippines’ quest for the first gold medal Wednesday when he won the BMX event of cycling in dominant fashion in the 2014 Asian Games, reports Manila Bulletin

Southeast Asian Games champion Daniel Patrick Caluag won all three runs in the 400-meter course to become the first Filipino cyclist to win the gold in the Games.

Quick off the starting hill, Caluag led from start to finish in all three runs, keeping his speed and balance off the obstacles before sweeping through the turns like a well-oiled locomotive.

Caluag, a 27-year-old Filipino born in Harbor City, posted his best time in the first run at 35.277 seconds and did 35.366 and 35. 431 seconds in the next runs.

Japanese Masahiro Sampei finished second in the first two runs and settled for the silver medal while Zhu Yan of China placed second in the third and final run to clinch the bronze.

Christopher John Caluag, Daniel’s brother, finished fourth in the eight-rider field.

Before crossing the finish line in the final run, Caluag looked at the crowd and pumped his fist in triumph.

“I did this for the country, for my baby Sydney Isabella, and for my wife,” the country’s first gold medalist said.

The Philippines picked up a bronze in taekwondo when Mary Anjelay Pelaez defeated Nway Nway of Myanmar, 3-0, in the women’s -46-kg. quarterfinals.

Against a towering Kim Sohul of South Korea, Pelaez was no match, losing, 14-2.

Another medal slipped from the country’s grasp when Christian Al dela Cruz, fighting in the men’s -80-kg. division, got hit with a head kick in the closing seconds and lost a heartbreaking 10-9 decision to Maksim Rafalovich of Uzbekistan.

Pauline Louise Lopez, the first to fight, lost in the first hurdle to Wang Yun of China, 3-0, in the women’s -57 kg. division.

Gilas Pilipinas ended its disappointing campaign with an 84-68 victory over Mongolia to salvage seventh place, the country’s worst finish in men’s basketball.

The Philippines won in rugby, but lost in women’s softball.

The Volcanoes erupted with a 59-0 win over Pakistan, but the Blu Girls went down to Asian champion China, 3-0.

With three days remaining, the Filipinos now have collected eight medals – one gold, two silvers, and five bronzes – good for 22nd place in the medal standings.
