Nearly 40 people have been killed in clashes which broke out outside the Yemeni capital Sana'a, Press TV reported.

"More than 38 people were killed and dozens more wounded," AFP quoted a Yemeni security official as saying on Thursday.

The clashes erupted after members of the pro-government Islah Party and the security forces ambushed a convoy of Houthis in an area north of Sana’a.

The fatalities on Thursday brought to over 80 the number of the people killed in the clashes in the past three days in Yemen.

Meanwhile, Jamal Benomar, the UN envoy to Yemen, has held talks with the leader of the Houthi movement, Abdulmalik al-Houthi, in Sa'ada in an effort to end the crisis.

Benomar described the negotiations with the leader as “constructive and positive”.

Reports earlier in the day said that a truce deal has been inked between Yemen's Houthi fighters and the army in an effort to end two months of deadly clashes in the province of al-Jouf.

The Houthi movement played a key role in the popular revolution that forced former dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down.

Saleh, who ruled Yemen for 33 years, stepped down in February 2012 under a US-backed power transfer deal in return for immunity, after a year of mass street demonstrations demanding his ouster.
