Sept. 12 By Huseyn Hasanov– Trend: Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov will meet with Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon as part of a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Dushanbe.
The construction of a gas pipeline branch through the territory of Tajikistan to China is expected to be discussed at the meeting, according to Tajik News Service "Avesta".
China has been buying gas in Central Asia since 2009 after the first two branches of the gas pipeline (A and B), originating from Turkmenistan through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, were commissioned.
The third branch (C) of the gas pipeline along the same route was commissioned in June 2014.
China and Turkmenistan have an agreement on increasing supplies up to 65 bcm of gas by 2020. The sides agreed to build an additional fourth branch (D) through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
SCO is an intergovernmental international organization. Its establishment was announced by Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in Shanghai on June 15, 2001.
Turkmenistan's regional activity has resulted in country building a gas pipeline with China in the region.
Moreover, Turkmenistan is implementing the large scale North-South railway project with participation of Iran and Kazakhstan. It has already started the construction of Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan steel highway.
Turkmen Dovlet khabarlary (TDK) state news service said on Sept.12 that the following key objectives have been reflected in the SCO charter: strengthening mutual trust and good neighborhood between the member states, promoting their effective cooperation in political, trade, economic, scientific, technical and cultural spheres, promoting the creation of democratic and fair political and economic world order.
“These goals directly overlap with the priorities of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy aimed at ensuring stable and balanced development of regional processes, active economic and trade relations, creating conditions for implementing large regional and international projects,” TDK stressed.
“Cooperation with SCO, which has great influence in the Eurasian continent, also promises much in terms of development of inter-regional relations. It promotes the use of maximum potential to ensure the full development of national economies and their successful integration into the world economic relations,” Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported.
