COLOMBO Sept 07:: Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe accompanied by a large business delegation arrived in Sri Lanka on Sunday for a two-day official visit on an invitation extended by the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his visit to Japan in March 2013.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa warmly welcomed the Japanese Prime Minister and First Lady Akie Abe at the Bandaranaike International Airport this afternoon.

On his arrival the Japanese prime minister launched a development project of the airport which is being funded by the Japanese government.

The Sri Lankan External Affairs Ministry noted on Sunday that Japan has contributed significantly to Sri Lanka's achievement and maintenance of social development.

Abe began a two-day visit to Sri Lanka on Sunday. It's the first visit by a Japanese prime minister to the country in 24 years.

Sri Lanka's civil war ended in 2009 when government troops defeated the Tamil Tiger rebels, who were fighting for a separate state for ethnic minority Tamils. But the government has faced international criticism that it has not done enough to reconcile with Tamils.

According to data up to 2012, Japan tops the list of Official Development Assistance (ODA) donors of Sri Lanka.

In 2012, Japan disbursed $116.94 million as loan aid, 36.25 million dollars as grant aid, and 29.02 million dollars as technical cooperation.
