Aug. 02--Iran and Sri Lanka have signed a deal, worth $110 million, based on which Iranian private sector will provide electricity to around one thousand villages in Sri Lanka.

So far, 400 villages have been supplied with electricity, the Mehr news agency reported on August 2.

According to Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Ministry's website, the project, dubbed as "RE8", is to serve remote areas as well as un-electrified gap areas in between already electrified areas.

The project is expected to bring benefits to about 180,000 rural households.

On July 2, Iranian Deputy Energy Minister Esmaeil Mahsouli said Iran is currently implementing 70 water and power projects, valued at $3.8 billion, in other countries.

The country has already terminated 224 projects, worth $1.508 billion, outside the country and is negotiating to carry out another 39 projects, valued at $2.3 billion in other countries, the Mehr News Agency quoted Mahsouli as saying.

Iran exported technical-engineering services to 40 countries despite all the barriers caused by Western sanctions imposed against the country over its nuclear program, the official added.

Iran exported 3,214.9 gigawatt hours of electricity to its neighboring countries in the first quarter of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21 -- June 20).

The figure shows a 12.43 percent increase compared to the same period of time of the previous year, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported on July 4.

Iran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity. The country currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.
