TRIPOLI, Lebanon - At least three people were killed in a fighting in Lebanon between pro and anti- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad activists on Friday, officials said.

The deadly clashes come as people in Lebanon remain divided over Syria's conflict. Violence frequently breaks out between two impoverished rival neighborhoods in Tripoli, one dominated by Sunni Muslims and the other by members of Assad's Alawite sect.

The latest deaths, which bring to 18 the number killed since the violence erupted in Tripoli one week ago, occurred just 50 km from the Syrian border.

Officials said that two gunmen were wounded in overnight clashes between fighters from the Sunni district of Bab al-Tabbaneh and the Alawite neighborhood of Jebel Mohsen. They died of their wounds early Friday, according to the officials.

They added that an elderly civilian man was shot dead by a sniper Friday. Eleven more were wounded as the city was rocked by fighting between opponents and supporters of Assad. > BNN

According to the Reuters, Lebanon's population is deeply divided over the Syrian war. Shia militant and political movement Hezbollah and its allies support Assad while many of the country's Sunnis back the revolt.

About 150 people, including 22 soldiers of the Lebanese army, have been injured in the clashes since last week.

Some media reports said gunmen with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades were still exchanging fire till Friday following the deaths.

Tripoli's Sunnis and Alawites have clashed on-and-off for decades in sectarian violence. However, the Syrian conflict has worsened the sectarian tensions, with each side accusing the other of using the city as a base for sending fighters and weapons in and out of Syria, the Reuters said.

Lebanon's parliament gave a newly-formed cabinet a vote of confidence Thursday, ending almost a year of political deadlock.

But the small Mediterranean country sees regular car bombs and rocket attacks, as well as incursions by the Syrian army in pursuit of rebels who move across the border.

Syrian troops Thursday closed a border crossing into Lebanon amid heavy clashes with rebels around the Bqaiaa crossing in the Wadi Khaled region in Syria

The fighting was so intense that stray bullets and rockets landed in Lebanon, according to Lebanese media.

Earlier this week, Syrian troops seized control of Yabroud, a strategically important Lebanese border town, in the Qalamoun area.

Lebanon's frontier towns, often used by rebels to recuperate, have been increasingly drawn into the Syrian war, and have recently been bombarded by Syrian helicopters and rockets.

Syrian troops have been on the offensive over the past months in areas close to the border, aiming to cut rebel supply lines across the boundary
