PHUKET: The sixth annual Phuket Local Food Festival started at Saphan Hin last night, with Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut serving up healthy portions of local delicacies.

“This is a great fair that all tourists should know about because it shows how beautifully unique Phuket is,” Governor Maitri said.

“In addition to our beautiful beaches, we have a special culture and cuisine that you will not find anywhere else.”

As part of the usual opening festivities, leading officials including Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (OrBorJor) President Paiboon Upatising mixed up a giant vat of the local dessert tu boh, a slurry of coconut milk with red bean, sweet potato, taro and tapioca.

“All food stalls at the fair are approved by the government’s ‘Clean Food, Good Taste’ initiative, and there are many other exhibits and stalls in the fair, and live performances on stage every night,” Mr Paiboon explained.

Providing the entertainment last night was famed Thai country music (luk-thung) singer Mangpor Chonticha and the Samkong School Super Dance troupe.

The festival continues at Saphan Hin central stage area (map here) until Tuesday.
