An active volcano in Indonesia news

People are being quickly evacuated from areas around an active volcano in Indonesia.

The volcano, in the country's west, has erupted more than 50 times, spewing gas and rocks.

Officials have informed the public about a danger zone around Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra.

People who have been living on the slopes of the volcano and those from up to 7 kilometres away have been told recent eruptions from the volcano may be the beginning of a worse outcome.

More than 20,000 people have been evacuated from nearby villages as lava and rocks from Sinabung spit as high as 4,000 metres.

Those people who were at the slope of the volcano are now in temporary shelters.

Emergency response teams are trying to increase the number of shelters.

Sinabung is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
