The US Department of Defense has told Saudi Arabia it will be granted approval for the purchase of thousands of anti-tank missiles.

Pentagon chief, Chuck Hagel, who has been on a visit to the Middle East, led the talks which have resulted in the approval.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress that Riyadh will be given permission to buy 14,000 tube-launched, optically tracked missiles and other weapons in two separate deals valued at nearly US$1.1 billion.

Saudi Arabia will also eventually receive more than 1,700 similar missiles.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the proposed sale would contribute to the national security of the United States by helping to improve security and political stability in the Middle East.

Chuck Hagel told American allies in the region that Washington would furnish Saudi Arabia with the missiles as it had proven itself to be a critical partner in the region.

On Friday, he said that the United States had no plans to scale back its military deployments or arms sales to the Persian Gulf states who could count on "a steady American hand in this region."
