The latest Miss World has been crowned in a glittering celebration on the Indonesian island of Bali, following dire threats from hardline Muslims.

Megan Young from the Philippines beat five other finalists to win the title that was linked by television to the world.

The 23-year-old was heavily protected, as were other contestants, following hardline anger against the pageant.

Over the past weeks, many people in the predominantly Muslim country, had taken to the streets to protest against the beauty contest.

Because of the pressure, the final was moved from the outskirts of the capital, Jakarta, to the Hindu-dominated resort island of Bali.

Radical group, the Islamic Defenders' Front had threatened to converge on Bali to stage protests on Saturday against the pageant.

While heavily armed police were in evidence around the pageant venue in Nusa Dua, southern Bali, no demonstrations occurred.

Instead, the group invited followers to a mass prayer session in the capital Jakarta to express opposition.

The hard liners had insisted the pageant be cancelled because it went against Islamic teachings.

As pressure mounted on the government, Miss World organisers agreed the contestants would wear conservative dress rather than bikinis.

However, many of the contestants wore evening gowns with plunging necklines.
