BANDA ACEH, Indonesia - At least 22 people have been killed and hundreds injured after a 6.1 magnitude quake rocked the Indonesian province of Aceh, officials said Wednesday.

The strong quake also damaged more than 2,500 houses and buildings in Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra, regularly hit by temblors.

"So far 22 people have died, 210 people were injured, and thousands of buildings and homes were damaged in the quake (on Tuesday)," National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

Nugroho said 12 people were killed and 70 others were injured by a landslide or collapsing buildings in the worst-hit area of Bener Meriah.

Ten more people were killed and 140 injured in neighbouring Central Aceh district, where about 1,500 houses and buildings were damaged.

The dead in Central Aceh's Blang Mancung village included at least six children who were killed when a mosque collapsed during a Quran reading session.

Rescuers were battling through landslides and blocked roads Wednesday to reach survivors.

The Air Force has dispatched a helicopter and a CN-235 aircraft to Bener Meriah, among the worst hit areas.

"We are now concentrating on searching for people who may be trapped under the rubble," said Rusli M. Saleh, the deputy district chief of Bener Meriah.

About 300 people in Bener Meriah camped out overnight in places like football fields, said an official from the local disaster agency.

"There were strong aftershocks last night and people didn't want to go back home, so they stayed in the open overnight, but we don't have enough tents," said the official.

"We have a power outage now and communications are unreliable."

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Ocean.

In 2004, a magnitude-9.1 earthquake off Aceh triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in 14 countries.
