A teenage human rights activist has been jailed for participating in an anti-regime demonstration south of Manama, Bahrain and posting a story about in on his Twitter page.

The boy had been involved in one of the many demonstrations which have occurred since mid-February 2011, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.

The protests led the Bahraini regime to launch a brutal crackdown, calling in Saudi-led Arab forces from neighbouring states.

Last week, the criminal court in Bahrain sentenced the 17-year-old boy to a year in prison for the crime of insulting the Al Khalifa family.

The head of the court is a member of the Al Khalifa family.

According to Press TV, Ali al-Shofa was arrested in a raid on a house in March, when he was accused of using his Twitter account to insult King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Reports suggest at least thirteen opposition leaders are being held in prison for involvement in protests against the Bahraini regime. Some have been given life sentences.

Human Rights Watch has condemned the latest verdict against the teenage boy, calling for his release.

The group has also called for the immediate release of others detained for peacefully exercising their rights.
