NEW DELHI, India - During Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to India, the two countries signed crucial agreements on a leasing port.

Officials in India confirmed that the country had signed agreements with Iran on leasing operational control of part of the Iranian east coast port of Chabahar to New Delhi for 18 months.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Rouhani and the leasing agreement giving operational control of Shahid Beheshti port - phase one of the Chabahar port, to India was signed near the two leaders.

India’s involvement in the development of Chabahar is a way for the country to gain access to the markets of central Asia as well as Afghanistan.

The $85 million project, which lies 90 km from the China-sponsored Gwadar port in Pakistan, creates a transit route between India, Iran and Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.

Addressing a joint press conference with the Iranian president, Modi said both countries wanted to expand bilateral ties and cooperation in economic development.

He added, “We will support the construction of the Chabahar-Zahedan rail link so that Chabahar gateway’s potential could be fully utilized. We want to expand connectivity, cooperation in the energy sector and the centuries-old bilateral relationship.”

However, progress on the project has been slow due to increased concerns that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration may eventually scrap the Iran nuclear deal.

Meanwhile, India and Iran also signed other agreements including a double taxation avoidance treaty, extradition, and cooperation in the farm sector.
