NEW DELHI, India - Delivering an order based on complaints that were filed in 2012, India’s Competition Commission slapped a huge fine on Google on Thursday.

The Competition Commission accused the world’s biggest search engine giant of unfair business practices in the Indian market for online search.

The regulator also slapped a fine of Rs 136 crore on Google and said that the penalty is being imposed on the company for "infringing anti-trust conduct.”

The case emerged as one of the rare cases globally, where Google has been penalized for unfair business practices.

The Alphabet-owned company had been facing allegations of indulging in abuse of dominant position in the market for online search through practices leading to search bias and search manipulation, among others.

The CCI order issued on Thursday said that the penalty amount of Rs 135.86 crore translates to 5 percent of the company's average total revenue generated from Indian operations from its different business segments for the financial years 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Further, the CCI said it has given thoughtful consideration on the submissions made by Google on issue of penalty and found it appropriate to impose a fine.

Complaints in 2012 were filed by Matrimony.com and Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS).
