PARIS, France - Violent brawls broke out in parts of France - all for the sweet chocolate and hazelnut spread, Nutella.

After a promotion was launched on Thursday, which reduced the price of over a million 950-gram pots of Nutella from 4.70 euros to 1.41 euros - hysterical scenes were witnessed in several supermarkets.

Several supermarkets operated by the Intermarche chain across the country witnessed fights breaking out over pots of Nutella.

As shoppers scrambled to get their hands on the discounted pots, brawls broke out and hysterical scenes were filmed and circulated on social media and television channels.

One video posted on Twitter showed customers shoving each other and shouting as they tried to get as many pots as possible.

The Le Parisien newspaper said in a report that shoppers started to fight in the northern town of Ostricourt, prompting police to step in.

Ferrero, which produces Nutella, deplored the incidents and distanced itself from the supermarket chain.

In an official statement, the company said, “We want to clarify that the decision for the special offer was taken unilaterally by Intermarche. We regret the consequences of this operation, which created confusion and disappointment in the consumers' minds."

The discount is available for shoppers until Saturday and yet supermarkets reported that stocks ran out very quickly at many supermarkets.
