DUBAI, U.A.E. - In a deal that came as a lifeline for Airbus’ double-decked A380, Emirates Airline announced a $16 billion deal to buy 20 Airbus A380s.

As part of the deal announced on Thursday, Emirates will buy 20 Airbus A380s now, with an option for 16 more.

For Airbus, the deal is a breakthrough as its double-decked A380 had been facing an uncertain future amid dramatic decline in sales.

Last week, Airbus sales chief John Leahy even acknowledged that the jet maker could end production of A380 if it did not win new orders soon.

Making the announcement of the deal on Thursday, Airbus’ Leahy said in a statement, “This new order underscores Airbus’ commitment to produce the A380 at least for another ten years. I’m personally convinced more orders will follow Emirates’ example and that this great aircraft will be built well into the 2030s.”

Currently, Emirates has 101 A380s in its fleet and 41 more on order.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates CEO said in the statement, “This order will provide stability to the A380 production line.”

Al Maktoum added that the carrier would “continue to work closely with Airbus to further enhance the aircraft and onboard product.”

The deal was hailed as a positive one for both the companies by analysts.

Airline analyst John Strickland of JLS Consulting was quoted as saying, "It's positive news for both sides. The A380 is critical to Emirates' hub-and-growth strategy and equally the airline is key to Airbus' continuation of the program. It will be a great relief to Airbus to have secured this order, but they have to work aggressively to secure orders from other airlines too now."
