BAGHDAD, Iraq - Since declaring victory over what once was the most dangerous terrorist organization in the region, the Islamic State Militant group - Iraq suffered its deadliest attack.

On Monday, twin suicide bombings rocked Baghdad, with authorities claiming that the bombers targeted the packed Tayran Square, which is in the heart of the capital.

Police officials said that the suicide bombers set off their explosive vests in an area packed with laborers and street vendors during the morning rush hour, leaving 38 people dead and over 100 others injured.

Emergency officials and ambulances rushed to the scene on Monday, as security forces sealed off the area with yellow tape.

Local media posted photos of the area of the bombing, that showed blood-stained belongings of people strewn around on pavement, as cleaners surrounded the area to clean it up.

In a statement, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri denounced the attack as a "cowardly act against innocent people.”

Al-Jabouri called on the government to take all necessary security measures.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s office issued a statement saying he had met security officials in charge of Baghdad and had ordered them to root out militant sleeper cells.

The attacks have not been claimed by any group so far but bore the hallmarks of an ISIS attack and have raised fears ahead of national elections planned to be held in May.

Al-Abadi earlier declared that Iraqi forces have driven ISIS from all the territory the extremists held, however, a deterioration in security could undermine his claim to have vanquished ISIS.

In a bid to lead a diverse coalition to power in the national elections, Al-Abadi had been hoping to extend the country's newfound unity.

The recent attack, analysts believe could create an opening for Al-Abadi’s main rival, former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, to return to power.
