North Korea may put on trial a US citizen who has been charged with attempting to overthrow the government. The North Korean official news agency has said the man, named as Pae Jun-Ho, has admitted the charges.

Pae Jun-Ho, who is known in the US as Kenneth Bae, was held last year after entering North Korea as a tourist. The KCNA news agency said preliminary inquiries into "crimes committed by American citizen Pae Jun-Ho have been closed."

The report continued: "In the process of investigation he admitted that he committed crimes aimed to topple the Democratic People's Republic of Korea with hostility toward it. His crimes were proved by evidence. He will soon be taken to the Supreme Court to face judgement."

His case has come at a time of intense tension between Pyongyang and Washington.

Mr Pae, is believed to be a tour operator. He is the sixth American detained in North Korea since 2009.

Most have been released following intervention by US political figures known to be acceptable to the North Korean government.

North Korea's criminal code provides for life imprisonment or the death penalty for the offence.

Former US presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter have both been involved in mediation over previous American detainees.

Washington has not publicly commented on the latest development.

Meanwhile, Seoul has announced it will pull out all 175 remaining workers from a jointly-run factory with North Korea which is situated in Kaesong.

Because North Korea has refused to engage in formal talks with South Korea, the Kaesong industrial complex will be left idle.

Two weeks ago North Korea withdrew its 53,000 employees and blocked access to the site.

The spiraling tension between the two Koreas has convinced the South Korean government to withdraw all remaining personnel in the area in order to protect their safety.

On March 30, North Korea declared that it was in a "state of war" with South Korea.
