As the super-typhoon struck the region - it left a trail of destruction across the region, leading to tens of thousands of storm-struck households losing power, even as shutdowns and evacuations were ordered.

Taiwan power said that nearly 200,000 households were left without electricity.

The destructive weather further forced schools and businesses to shut down and most domestic and international flights, from Kaohsiung airport were cancelled.

The Central Emergency Operation Centre has said that in Kaohsiung and other cities over 1,500 residents were evacuated.

According to the Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau, the category 5 storm is set to rip through the southern and eastern cities, including Kaohsiung and Hualien.

It further warned that strong winds, torrential rain and flooding is expected in the region.

Weather bureau spokeswoman Hsieh Pei-yun said, “This typhoon is the world’s strongest so far this year. Its impact on Taiwan will peak all day today.”

Meteorologists have said that Taiwan was expected to feel the full force of the typhoon on Wednesday and into Thursday before the storm reached China.

Authorities in China are already making preparations to deal with the brutality of the typhoon - with Meranti expected to make landfall in the southern Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Fujian on Thursday.
