HANOI, Vietnam - India today offered $500 million credit line to Vietnam to boost defence cooperation, as the two nations upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the wake of emerging regional challenges. > Big News Network

"Our decision to upgrade our Strategic Partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership captures the intent and path of our future cooperation. It will provide a new direction, momentum and substance to our bilateral cooperation," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Hanoi.

Vietnam has till date had Comprehensive Strategic Partnership only with Russia and China.

Modi said the two nations recognised the need to come together for responding to emerging regional challenges. "Our common efforts will also contribute to stability, security and prosperity in this region."

The agreement was among a dozen cooperation pacts Modi signed with his Vietnamese counterpart, Nguyen Xuan Phuc. The deals signed covered a wide range of areas including information technology, space, double taxation and sharing white shipping information.

"The range of agreements signed just a while ago point to the diversity and depth of our cooperation," Modi, the first Indian prime minister to visit the country in the last 15 years, said.

"India not only stood by Vietnam during its freedom struggle but also during its phase of national reunification. The late 1970s and 80s were a difficult period for Vietnam, and India was one of the few countries that stood by Vietnam in its time of need. My visit to Vietnam is a reinforcement of our friendship, solidarity and comprehensive cooperation," he said.

The Indian prime minister is scheduled to travel to China from Hanoi to attend the G-20 summit.
