ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia - The 11th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit opened in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator on Friday. The aim of the meeting is to promote "partnership for the future through connectivity."> Big News Network

According to reports, leaders and delegates of 51 countries, European Union and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will meet and discuss future cooperation.

Indian Vice-President Hamid Ansari on Friday, while addressing Plenary Session II on 'Promoting ASEM Partnership for Greater Connectivity’, condemned the Nice attacks which killed over 70 people on Thursday. A truck ploughed through a crowded street in the French city of Nice, reports stated.

He urged ASEM members to support adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism under the aegis of the United Nations.

He said, “Let us pledge today to work together to erase the scourge of terrorism by taking speedy action against the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terror. I join others in offering my condolences to the Government and people of France on yesterday’s happening in Nice. Early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism under the aegis of the UN is an imperative today. I urge ASEM support for it. All our societies today face unprecedented levels of threat from terrorism in all its manifestations. The most recent example is what has happened, most unfortunately in France. We need to cooperate meaningfully to deal with this threat.”

Ansari also called for collaboration to protect “our global commons such as the seas and oceans in accordance with international conventions.”

Over the South China Sea dispute, he said, “Let us resolve disputes peacefully, without threats or use of force, and exercise self restraint in the conduct of activities that could escalate disputes effecting peace and stability. As a State Party to the UNCLOS, India urges all parties to show utmost respect for the UNCLOS, which establishes the international legal order of the seas and oceans.”

China’s claim to most of South China Sea was struck down by a UN-backed tribunal but China has refused to accept the verdict.

Meanwhile, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on the sidelines of ASEM, met her Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe and said that her government is trying to find the root of the recent terrorism that has shaken the country.

She said that the intelligent people of Bangladesh are very active and will overcome the situation.

According to reports, Hasina offered her condolence again for the Japanese people who lost their lives in the Bangladesh cafe. Abe said that Japan will stand by Bangladesh to find the root of the terrorist attacks.

On the other hand, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla held a bilateral meeting with Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj on the sidelines of ASEM.

They discussed efforts to strengthen relations between the two nations. The Indonesian vice president also spoke about the importance of cooperation between the countries, especially in the fields of trade and economy.
