DUBAI, U.A.E. - Leading developer from Dubai, Emaar Properties has unveiled a $1 billion project, ‘The Tower’ that will surpass the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa.> Big News Network

Emaar said that the towering new skyscraper will be a landmark and the focal point of the Dubai Creek Harbour development

Addressing a press conference in Dubai, Mohammed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties said that the new tower will be as “equally great” as the Burj Khalifa and “as popular” as the Eiffel Tower.

Alabbar added, “The Tower in Dubai Creek Harbour is our tribute to the positivity, energy and optimism that Dubai and the U.A.E. celebrate, led by a leadership committed to all-round progress. A shining beacon of hope for the world, celebrating diversity and human achievements, this new iconic landmark further highlights the country’s ambition and futuristic vision and enhance our nation’s pride.”

While Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world and its height goes up to 828 metres, Emaar said that the new observation tower would be “a notch” taller than the Burj Khalifa.

The Tower is expected to have residential units, a rooftop courtyard and a hotel and it is said to be more of a cable-supported spire containing observation decks, hanging garden and possibly other tourist facilities.

Spanish-Swiss net-futuristic architect Santiago Calatrava Valls is said to have been chosen as the architect of the tower after a competitive pitch from the world’s top architects.

Valls told the media, “From the beginning, my team and I have tried to put the best of ourselves into this project, since it is very special and is a great honour to participate. The collaboration with such a prestigious firm as Emaar Properties makes it even more exciting and demanding. The design has clear reference to the classic art from the past and the culture of the place while serving as a great technological achievement. In my whole career, I have perceived technology as a vehicle to beauty and to art. This project envisages an artistic achievement in itself, inspired by the idea of welcoming people, not only from Dubai and the U.A.E., but from the entire world. It is a symbol of an abiding belief in progress.”

Emaar also mentioned that the new mega retail district, scheduled to be launched in 2 months, will be linked to The Tower. He added that The Tower is due to open by the time Dubai hosts the World Expo in 2020.

Emaar’s Burj Khalifa is reportedly expected to be overtaken by the 1km-high Kingdom Tower in Jeddah as the world’s tallest building in 2020.
