KABUL, Afghanistan - A powerful earthquake jolted the Eshkasham town in Afghanistan, with tremors being felt in in several major cities across southwest Asia.> Big News Network

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was registered on the richter scale as measuring 6.6 in magnitude.

The quake that originated in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan, had its epicentre 39 km west-southwest of Eshkasham town in Afghanistan, near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border. The location is said to be about 282 km north east of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul.

Several people across Kabul, Islamabad, Lahore and Delhi, where the tremors were felt left their homes and offices.

Reports revealed that the 7.5 magnitude earthquake experienced in October 2015 that killed at least 300 people was experienced in the same border area.

USGS said that the latest quake, in the sparsely-populated Hindukush mountains, struck at a depth of 210 km, which was the same depth recording during the 2015 earthquake.

While media in Pakistan reported some injuries in Peshawar, the metro train system was temporarily suspended in India’s capital city, New Delhi. Power outages were experienced in many cities in the affected region.

The USGS has said that the earthquake took place in “one of the most seismically hazardous regions on earth.”

The recent quake, like the previous one, originated deep below the earth’s surface, at a depth of more than 200 km, which experts claimed were quite common in the Hindukush region. News reports stated that the area has experienced about 40 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above in the last 12 months, with over half of the quakes originating at depths of 200 km or below the earth’s surface.

Another report elaborated, the Hindukush mountains sit on the corner of the Indian plate, rather than being at the front line of the continental collision, where the Himalayas are thrust upwards as India disappears beneath Eurasia at a rate of 40-50mm (2ins) per year.
