Afghanistan news

Kabul  - At least 22 Afghan civilians were killed and 50 others were wounded in a twin suicide attack in southern Kandahar province on Wednesday, local officials said.

In a statement, NATO said the explosion had occurred "several kilometers" from where its troops were stationed.

The American embassy in Kabul added that "by targeting a busy civilian area, the terrorists have once again demonstrated their utter disregard for the safety and security of the Afghan people".

Meanwhile, NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said it was looking very seriously at reports that 18 people, including women and children, were killed in a NATO air strike in Baraki Barak district to capture a senior Taliban commander.

The deaths in Baraki Barak threaten to raise tensions with NATO as it prepares to hand over control to local forces by the end of 2014.

Tahir Khan Sabri, the governor of Logar province, which lies south of Kabul, said 18 villagers, most of them women and children gathered for a wedding, were killed in the air strike conducted by NATO forces early Wednesday.

"They were all civilians," he said, adding that President Karzai had ordered an investigation into the deaths.
