Dozens killed in suicide bombing attack in Pakistan

LAHORE, Pakistan - Dozens were killed and scores injured in a suicide bombing attack that took place in a public park in Pakistan's Lahore city on > Big News Network

Punjab Health Minister Salman Rafique confirmed that the explosion that took place in a packed public park killed 67 people and left 300 others injured.

The attack was carried out by a suicide bomber laden with explosives in the parking area of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park, where families were picnicking for the Easter holiday. A splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was aimed specifically at Christians who were celebrating Easter.

Dr Haider Ashraf, Police Chief of Lahore said, "A large number of people, majority of them women and children, were present in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore when the suicide bomber blew himself up. Mostly women and children are killed and injured in the blast."

Police officials said in a news report that they had recovered the body of the suicide bomber who they believed was aged between 25 and 30 years old.

Shabaz Sharif, Chief Minister of Punjab has announced a three-day mourning in the province.

In the last few years, Pakistan has suffered from Islamist militancy, including a Taliban insurgency in the tribal areas along the Afghanistan border.

A spokesperson for the Taliban splinter group known as Jamat-ul-Ahrar said similar attacks would follow.
