MEXICO CITY - The Christianity of Donald Trump is suspect. And the man who has questioned the controversial Republican presidential frontrunner's faith is none other than Pope Francis, the incumbent leader of the worldwide Catholic Church.>  Big News Network

"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the gospel," the Pope told reporters on board the papal airliner as he returned to Rome after his six-day visit to Mexico.

Francis was asked an opinion on Trump's proposals to stop migrants and build a wall along the border between the United States and Mexico and make the American neighbor pay for it.

The Pope refused to thrust himself directly in the American presidential race and declined to say whether Trump, who is leading the Republican race for president, should be voted to power.

"I say only that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that. We must see if he said things in that way and I will give him the benefit of the doubt," the Pope said.

Trump, calling himself a "proud Christian", returned the insult immediately and said Francis' comments were "disgraceful".

"No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man's religion or faith," the Republican hopeful said in a statement.

He said that the government in Mexico has "made many disparaging remarks about me to the Pope".

"If and when the Vatican is attacked by (the Islamic State), which as everyone knows is (the terror group's) ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president because this would not have happened," Trump said.

"(The Pope) said negative things about me because the Mexican government convinced him that Trump is not a good guy."

Earlier this month in an interview with Fox News, Trump called Pope Francis "a very political person".

And on Thursday, he said the Pope doesn't understand "the danger of the open border we have with Mexico".

"And I think Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is, because they're making a fortune and we're losing."

Trump has alleged that Mexico sends "rapists" and criminals to the US.

Jerry Falwell Jr, the president of conservative Christian Liberty University and a Trump supporter, told CNN the Pope went too far.

"Jesus never intended to give instructions to political leaders on how to run a country," he said.
