BEIRUT, Lebanon Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has vowed a revenge attack against Israel following the killing of a high-profile militant allegedly in an Israeli airstrike near the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The Hezbollah warning against Israel, which sparked fears of violence in the volatile region, came as thousands of group supporters Monday gathered in Beirut for the tributes and funeral of the dead militant whose coffin was carried in a procession amid shouts of "death to Israel".

Hezbollah alleged that Samir Kantar was killed Saturday along with eight others in the airstrike on a residential building in Jaramana.

Kantar spent 30 years in an Israeli prison after he was convicted of the 1979 murders of an Israeli policeman along with a father and his 4-year-old daughter.

He was released in 2008 as part of a prisoner swap with Hezbollah.

Nasrallah in a televised speech on Monday evening pledged to strike back at the Jewish state even as he appeared softer than normal in his tone as he refrained from making any fiery threats during the speech addressing the assassination.

"Samir is one of us and a commander of our resistance and it is our right to retaliate for his assassination in the place, time and a way we see appropriate. We will exercise this right, God willing," Nasrallah said.

"We have no doubt or question that Israel is the one which assassinated Samir Qantar, its planes fired precision missiles on a residential apartment [he was in]," Nasrallah added.

Hezbollah officials had pledged to avenge his killing, sparking fears of escalation in a volatile region.

Hezbollah fighters in military uniforms carried Qantar's coffin on their shoulders to the Rawdat al-Sayida Zeinab cemetery that contains the graves of many Hezbollah fighters and commanders.

Thousands attended Kantar's funeral with people swarming his coffin, draped with a yellow Hezbollah flag.

"If the Israelis imagine that by targeting Samir Kantar they have closed an account, they are very wrong because they know and will know that they have opened accounts that are not closed with a treacherous missile," senior Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine said at the funeral.

Israeli has neither confirmed nor denied that it was behind Kantar's assassination. It however welcomed Kantar's killing.

Israeli minister Yoav Gallant said, "I am not confirming or denying anything to do with this matter," but added, "It is good that people like Samir Qantar will not be part of our world."

In Lebanon, Kantar was known as "the dean of Lebanese prisoners," a reference to his long jail sentence in Israel.> BNN
