ADEN, Yemen - An Islamic State-claimed bombing in this Yemeni port city claimed the lives of the governor of Aden province and eight of his bodyguards Sunday, officials said.

The killing is the most high profile assassination in Yemen by the terror group that controls large territories of Iraq and Syria.

According officials, Governor Jaafar Saad and eight of his guards were killed as their convoy traveled through a district near the seaport.

The bombing was claimed by a branch of Islamic State based in Aden, according to a statement on social media translated by SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors extremist activity.

The Islamic State group said it detonated a car loaded with explosives targeting Saad's convoy in Aden's Tawahi district. The group referred to Saad as a "tyrant" and warned the "heads of the apostasy" in Yemen that it would carry out "operations to chop off their rotten heads".

Yemen, which is battling a deadly civil war between government forces and Iran-back Shia Houthi rebels, is also home to what Washington considers the most dangerous Al Qaeda offshoot, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

controls parts of the country, mainly in the east and the south. However, the Islamic State's local affiliate has been stepping up its attacks lately, including an explosion at a mosque and targeted suicide car bombings.

The Saudi-led alliance has stepped in to restore President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and his government to power with its seat in Aden. Recent attacks have disrupted such attempts. Hadi returned to the southern city in November from exile in Saudi Arabia.

Numerous Islamic State branches have sprouted in Yemen since the Saudi campaign began. Twin attacks by the militants on Houthi mosques in the capital San'a killed more than 140 people in March.

Islamic State has listed both sides of the conflict as enemies and has attacked both the Houthis and the forces allied with the Saudi coalition.

The group wants to govern Yemen based on its strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Saad, a major general in Yemen's army and prominent figure among pro-Saudi forces in Aden, was appointed governor in October. In the same month, a series of coordinated Islamic State bombings killed 15 soldiers in the city.> BNN
